Happy 2009 everybody!

Yes indeed, 2009 is here. Like all of you, we’ve said farewell to 2008 and welcome 2009 in the best possible way: fireworks, champagne and lots of fun! Most of the TripShake team gathered in the mountains of Lombardy, near Bergamo, to party our asses off, while Alessio was attending one of the crazy parties organized by couchsurfers in Prague. We’ve got news of other TripShakers spending NYE in Saint Petersbourg, New York, and many many other places all around the world. Whatever you were doing, we hope you had a great start as we did.

A postcard from Berlin

Reichstag" width="240" height="180" />Hallo! Wir sind in Berlin, at Web2ExpoEurope, one of the O’Reilly Web2 conferences that was brought to Europe by the almighty Tim.

We didn’t have much time to tour the city yet, as we’re pitching TripShake when we can, and following the conference sessions.

In fact, we had the great opportunity to be partecipating at PitchCamp, one of the great sessions organized in the conference that gave a selected few startups (12 out of the 50 that sent the application) the chance to be coached by one of the experts in the panel. We were paired with Jens Redmer from Google, who helped us a lot refine our pitch and got us ready to present TripShake to a panel of investors and experts. Thanks Jens, and thanks to Ted Shelton and Robert Goldberg for organizing the whole thing.

Yesterday the explosive Mike Butcher from TechCrunch organized an improvised up-the-stairs pitch on level C of the congress center: 10 startups showed up, and it was a fun time for all of us. Mike is a great showman and we all did our best to pitch the whole startup in 1 minute. You can listen to the results right on TechCrunch UK.

Coming to the fun stuff, one bit of advice from Berlin. If you happen to be in the city and you want to taste great German food, there is one place you should go: nicknamed StÃ¤V, the StÃ¤ndige Vertretung sits on the banks of the Spree, at the Subway and S-Bahn Friedrichstrasse. The exact address is Schiffbauerdamm 8, Berlin: be sure to try the amazing Berlin meatballs, or the marinated roasted meat. You can end your dinner with a flambÃ©e apfel cake, but be sure to light up the fire right away, or they will add more Calvados, making it harder to get home straight after dinner. TschÃ¼ss!

Happy World Tourism Day!

Today we all celebrate World Tourism Day: it’s the 28th World Tourism Day celebrated, a date that origins from the day when the WTO (as in World Tourism Organization) adopted his statute, on September 27th, 1980.

This year’s celebrations are taking place in Lima, Peru, with a conference about the challenges that climate change poses to tourism these days. For more information you can check out the WTO’s website section about the conference, with lots and lots of materials to dive into.

TripShake @ BlogFest (Italy)

The Italian blogosphere is ready for a 3-day-long appointment in Riva del Garda, on the Garda Lake, full of appointments and events: the first Italian BlogFest. Giorgio and I are going to help organize one of these events on Friday, the TravelCamp, a free-form, ideas rich discussion about what’s happening to the industry of travel on and off the internet. We’ll be joined by our friends at Roomorama (Federico is here for a few days, yay!). So if you are on the lake and want to know more about TripShake, Roomorama and in general what’s happening in the travel scene on the Internet, come and join us!

Mashable SummerMash NYC

So yesterday we went and saw how things are in the NYC tech scene with SocialMediaCampNewYork (see #smcampnyc on Twitter and the other social networks) and SummerMash NYC, organized by the folks at Mashable. There were many, many, many enterpreneurs and their ventures, a lot of consultants, some bloggers, a few journalist and only a couple of VCs at both events, where people just enjoyed their summer time and networked like the party would never stop. Among the many, I met the guys at TripWolf, who run another travel start-up that now entered the public beta stage, and Federico, an Italian entepreneur based in New York who started Roomorama, a NYC-based service to find and post temporary and stable sublets of rooms, apartments and houses, who we are now going to visit while we’re in New York to talk business.

All in all it was a lot of fun, and a lot of good contacts both personal- and business-wise: thanks Mashable, the SocialMediaCampNewYork organizers, and all the sponsors that helped making this happen!
